Treating Eating Disorders in the Diet Culture Era: Navigating Transference and Countertransference.

Body image, weight stigma, fat-phobia, and internalized bias often find their way into the counseling room—sometimes in subtle or unconscious ways. When left unexamined, these influences can shape transference and countertransference within the therapeutic relationship. Understanding how these dynamics show up can help clinicians respond with greater intention, awareness, and care.

This workshop examines the traditional weight-focused lens within medical and mental health settings and explores how cultural norms and bias may impact both clients and clinicians. Participants will learn to recognize transference and countertransference related to weight and body image, while developing practical tools to foster a safe, reflective, and supportive therapeutic space. Clinicians are also encouraged to explore their own beliefs and internal narratives, supporting a stance of humility, curiosity, and commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth.
